Multiple manhole fires shut down roads near the Longfellow Bridge and Massachusetts General Hospital and forced MBTA Red Line trains to bypass the Charles/MGH stop for several hours Tuesday.

The Boston Fire Department said it received a call for smoke coming out of multiple manholes at about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

The article goes on to state the following:

“There have been multiple explosions, the ground around the manhole has buckled,” the fire department wrote, tweeting photos of a firefighter hosing down one of the manholes.

“Due to a working manhole fire in the area, all trains are temporarily bypassing Charles/MGH station,” the MBTA tweeted. Service resumed later that afternoon.
