President Trump responded Thursday morning to the news that Democrat Congressman Elijah Cummings had passed away.

Cummings, 68, chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee and a harsh critic of President Trump, was considered one of the most powerful Democrats on Capitol Hill and played a huge role in the Democrats’ ongoing efforts to impeach the president.

He died unexpectedly Thursday morning while in the hospital.

President Trump released the following statement on Twitter:

My warmest condolences to the family and many friends of Congressman Elijah Cummings. I got to see first hand the strength, passion and wisdom of this highly respected political leader. His work and voice on so many fronts will be very hard, if not impossible, to replace!

Never a derogatory word from our President. Always uplifting and respectful when people die or leave. Says what he thinks in life.
