(CNN) β€” A Florida student obsessed with the University of Tennessee wanted to represent the Volunteers during his elementary school’s “College Colors Day,” but didn’t own any of their apparel — so he took the matter into his own hands.

Laura Snyder, his teacher at Altamonte Elementary School in Altamonte Springs, says he drew a “U.T.”, the university’s logo, on paper and pinned it to an orange t-shirt.

The article goes on to state the following:

“When the day finally arrived, he was SO EXCITED to show me his shirt,” Snyder wrote Wednesday onΒ Facebook. “I was impressed that he took it one step further to make his own label.”

But by lunch time, the spirited Vols fan was in tears.

The article states that other students mocked the homemade spirit shirt, leaving the boy in tears.

After the teacher’s post (below) went viral, the University of Tennessee announced it was turning his “U.T.” design into an official T-shirt. (Scroll down to see photos, along with a letter from the boy’s mother.)

Look, I hate bullying but realistically your in Florida in SEC country, do you think everyone is gonna say β€œ oh what a great shirt β€œ? Now I don’t know how bad the bullying was so I want to be careful because things can go to far easily but sometimes it just seems like nobody can take any ribbing anymore.

Heart warming story. I’m thrilled for this student. Kudos for the Teacher showing this student and others that bullying is hurtful and there are adults and teachers who support the them. And to Mr. Ken, For no reason I was targeted and bullied to the point I transferred school districts. Never had another issue but even now at 58 yrs old, I stand strong against bullying and taught my children to be compassionate towards others. Today I have strong successful hard working conservative adult children who are caring and compassionate people.
Joking and ribbing is one thing, bullying another to the point of tears is a whole other subject.
