A 17-year-old Lake Mary High School student died by suicide at the school early Wednesday, authorities said, prompting a brief lockdown of the campus and leaving students stunned and the campus in mourning.

Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma said the student, an 11th grader, died from a single gunshot in the school’s auditorium building just before 8 a.m. School resource deputies and a nurse responded in “less than a minute” but could not save the girl, he said.

The article goes on to state the following:

Lemma called what happened a “tragedy” and stressed there was no threat to anyone at Lake Mary High or other schools. The girl’s name was not released by authorities Wednesday, but the sheriff said investigators were in contact with her family.
