WEST VALLEY CITY — Police shot and killed a man in the DUI processing center in the basement of West Valley City Hall Friday night, police said.

The man was taken into custody and was in City Hall, 3600 S. Constitution Blvd., when an altercation occurred between him and officers, according to West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.

Sometime during the altercation, one police officer shot and killed the man. Police didn’t immediately have details on what exactly caused the altercation or if the man had a weapon. It’s not clear if he was detained or handcuffed when the altercation occurred.

Multiple officers were present during the incident. Only one officer fired a weapon. That officer has been placed on administrative leave, as is protocol, pending the results of an investigation.
