Morning briefing: Dec 1
Today is December 1, and here are the stories I am following.
1- Marches continue in Hong Kong
A huge crowd took to the streets of Hong Kong on Sunday, some driven back by tear gas, to demand more democracy and an investigation into the use of force to crack down on the six-month-long anti-government demonstrations. Thousands turned out, from hardened youthful protesters in black outfits and face masks to parents with their children.

2- Plane crash in SD leaves 9 dead
Authorities say nine people have been killed after a plane crashed in South Dakota. According to reports, 12 people were aboard the Pilatus PC-12 when it crashed about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, shortly after taking off from Chamberlain, about 140 miles (225.3 kilometers) west of Sioux Falls. The single-engine plane was bound for Idaho Falls, Idaho.Media reports say Chamberlain and central south-central South Dakota were under a winter storm warning at the time of the crash.
DML: May they rest in peace.
3- Mexican cartel battle leaves more than a dozen dead near Texas border
Mexican security forces fought an hour-long gun battle Saturday with suspected cartel gunmen in Villa Union, a town in Coahuila state about an hour’s drive southwest of Eagle Pass, Texas, leaving at least 14 people dead, officials said.
Coahuila state Gov. Miguel Angel Riquelme told local media four of the dead were police officers killed in the initial confrontation, and that several municipal workers were missing.
He said the armed group stormed the town of 3,000 residents in a convoy of trucks, attacking local government offices and prompting state and federal forces to intervene. Ten alleged members of the Cartel of the Northeast were killed in the response.
DML: Trump needs to destroy the cartels once and for all.
4- Newsweek fires reporter
The Newsweek writer behind a story on President Trump’s Thanksgiving plans has been fired but is pushing back on the perception that the published story — initially leaving out that Trump was visiting troops in Afghanistan, but rather mistakenly saying he would be “tweeting” and “golfing” — was her fault. “Newsweek investigated the failures that led to the publication of the inaccurate report that President Trump spent Thanksgiving tweeting and golfing rather than visiting troops in Afghanistan,” a Newsweek representative told the Washington Examiner in an exclusive piece published Saturday.
DML: Fake news never wins.
5- Harris aide slams candidate
A top aide to Kamala Harris gave a damning assessment of the California senator’s struggling campaign in her resignation letter, declaring that she has never seen an organization “treat its staff so poorly” and accused the campaign of encouraging people to move across states — only to lay them off without notice. “This is my third presidential campaign and I have never seen an organization treat its staff so poorly,” Kelly Mehlenbacher, then the state operations director for Harris’ campaign, said in the letter obtained by The New York Times. “While I still believe that Senator Harris is the strongest candidate to win in the General Election in 2020, I no longer have confidence in our campaign or its leadership.”
